A sad part of history, a period never to be forgotten.
More than 50,000 Asians expelled within 90 days.
The anger of the dictator Idi Amin was unleashed upon the Ugandan Asians. A period of total unrest, homes, shops, factories all looted at will. Fear became the tool of rule. Overnight most Ugandans turned upon the Asians.
All the families being pushed from pillar to post, gathering their belongings and joining queues each day to collect their documents in order to exit Uganda safely. Father, mothers and grandparents in total turmoil.
The United Kingdom was just one of the many countries where devastated exiled families arrived. Whilst the newspaper ‘Uganda Argus’ would print warnings telling them not to go to many of the UK cities. Words like refugee and immigrant were ones which were unknown to Ugandan Asians.
Was this going to be the new life for Ugandan Asians?
Ugandans on the other hand, lost more than 500,000 of their own blood during the dictatorship of Idi Amin.
Two generations on and 50 years later, this is further from the truth. Ugandan Asians, became successful in all walks of life and some went back after the call to rebuild Uganda came from H.E. The President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
We now go back through a journey in time to visit our old homes and embark upon delivering great initiatives in Uganda. Join us, be part of a historic journey.
Let us make a difference and remember those 500,000 plus lives that were lost in Uganda after we left.
A horrific part of history never to be repeated, let all of us throughout the world share our human values and learn to live in peace and harmony.
