Once Upon A Time 50 Years Ago, is an initiative that has been started as a movement to build and leave a lasting legacy in Uganda as she moves into the next decade.
This journey should not forget the struggles and one of those sad times in history was the Expulsion of the Ugandan Asians. There was no time or suitable occasion to stop and look back or to consider the future.
By the 1997, that a small group of 27,000 people who had found their new home in the United Kingdom, had not only managed to rise from their new start, but had also succeeded in contributing to the nation as a whole. No sector of British life had gone untouched. Significant contributions had been made to all realms, whether it was politics, business, finance, the arts and sports.
The story of the Ugandan Asians, is known to the world. BUT, the story of the Ugandans? Has that ever been told?
In Uganda, the mass expulsion of the Asians led to a sudden loss of business expertise, professional skills and administrative capacity. The entire middle section of the economy was lost, which, ultimately led to a collapse of the entire economy, a period of serious economic decline and hardship for Ugandans.
In this period, Uganda went from being one of the most prosperous countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to the one of the poorest
Through this initiative, we aim to set-up projects which will empower the youth of Uganda and skill them for tomorrow’s world, ensuring the basic necessities are in place for them to thrive.
